CRAGSIDE

Cragside is the creation of the 1st Lord Armstrong (1810-1900), innovator, engineer and gunmaker. The architect of the original house is unknown, but in 1869 Armstrong called in Norman Shaw to transform Cragside into a proper country mansion. By means of his gradual additions over the years, the house came to assume it's wild picturesque outline. To Shaw also are due the grandest of Cragside's interiors, which contain some of his best-preserved and most original work. Cragside was the first house in the world to be lit by electricity derived from water power.
